Fewer games. Fewer distractions. More space to work on your game. But that doesn\u2019t mean just skating for the sake of skating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re serious about improving, this is your window to slow things down, clean things up, and level up the right parts of your game. Here\u2019s how I recommend approaching it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Have a Purpose Every Time You Step on the Ice<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Summer skates are a chance to make real progress\u2014but only if you approach them with intent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about what you\u2019re working on: maybe it\u2019s staying poised under pressure, refining your edgework, or getting more consistent with puck control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Show up with a plan. A clear focus helps turn ice time into development time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:19px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. <strong>Don\u2019t Chase Ice Time\u2014Chase Intentional Ice Time<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>More isn\u2019t always better. More&nbsp;<em>on-purpose<\/em>&nbsp;is better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask yourself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is this skate giving me the right kind of reps?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Am I getting feedback, or just going through lines?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Am I being challenged, or coasting through it?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Good development sessions give you structure, feedback, and opportunities to fail and adjust. That\u2019s where the growth is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:19px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Master the Basics, Then Layer Complexity<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The game isn\u2019t built off highlight-reel moments. It\u2019s built off posture, balance, weight shifts, and puck control under stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The foundation matters more than people realize:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A strong base posture lets you move\u00a0<em>with<\/em>\u00a0the puck, not just around it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shave and slide techniques give you control and deception.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Puck load patterns set you up to shoot or pass with intent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Summer is the time to hammer those in. It might not feel flashy\u2014but it pays off in every zone, in every game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:19px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Seek Discomfort<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re never messing up, you\u2019re not pushing hard enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Great players lean into that uncomfortable space\u2014the part of a drill where things break down, and you have to figure it out. That\u2019s where habits get re-wired. That\u2019s how you build trust in your skillset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:19px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Take a Holistic Approach<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Reps on the ice are just one piece. What you do off the ice ties it all together:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Incorporate an off-ice strength program with the same focus on purpose and intent. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Watch video of yourself or others and actually\u00a0<em>study<\/em>\u00a0 the movements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stickhandle in a mirror, or barefoot to improve balance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take two minutes after a skate to ask:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What did I do well today?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What frustrated me?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What will I focus on next session?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This kind of reflection turns average skates into high-quality development days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:19px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Final Thoughts<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t need to be perfect.
